The UK’s utilities infrastructure – electricity, gas, water, sewage – is really out of date. Some of the major works date back to the 1970s or even the 1950s – and in the case of water and sewage, back to Victorian times.
Of course it’s a bit tricky changing pipes, but we’ve been really procrastinating on it for decades. Now one person’s fighting to fix the system.
Sarah Poppy Jackson, author of ‘Reclaim Your Sh*t’, is campaigning to end the futile cycle of cleaning our water just to defecate into it. She’s speaking out because cleaning water uses up a lot of energy. Flooding our toilets with it just doesn’t make sense, especially when we could use grey-water or rainwater instead, or even different toilets.
We’re taking our clean water for granted, and we need to urgently have a conversation about it.
