Green Party makes huge gains in Gloucestershire

Greens make record gains in Gloucestershire

The Green Party has made record gains in the local elections. After Friday we now have 737 Green Councillors, 13 regions had breakthrough Greens elected (like we did in Cheltenham last year), and we're now the largest party in 9 councils across the country! That includes Mid Suffolk where not only are we the largest party, we're the first Green majority led council - not just in England, but anywhere outside of Australia.

Locally we saw huge success as well. Our friends in Tewkesbury Greens defeated 3 sitting Conservative councillors going from from one councillor to 4,  in the process and leading to the creation of the first ever Green Group on Tewkesbury Council -  a fantastic result.

Cotswolds Greens gained a second councillor, laying the groundwork for big growth next time.

And in the Forest of Dean, the Green group doubled in size to 15 Green Councillors, a stunning result, becoming the largest party and currently negotiating with other parties to be running the council. Surely a platform to contest the parliamentary seat at the next General Election and perhaps our first ever Gloucestershire Green MP?

These are all significant wins, made possible by local volunteers working together.

It's our turn in 2024 here in Cheltenham, and the fight begins today to get more Greens elected to push for the greener, local politics we need. We've had almost 15 years of low ambition green washing from the Tories and Liberal Democrats alike here, it is time for change!
